Could Facebook Photos Contribute To Teens Urge To Drink?
Teens face a lot of stress, and sometimes they turn to drinking and drugs to cope with that stress. According to Huffington Post, some teens start being exposed to pictures of other teens drinking and drugging on Facebook, and it makes them want to try it. In 2010, Joseph Califano Jr., the chairman and founder of National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), released results of his National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XV: Parents and Teens.
Califano said, “The relationship of social-networking sites’ images of kids drunk, passed out, or using drugs…to increased risk of teen substance abuse offers grotesque confirmation of the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words.” The CASA study suggests that 70% of teens spend some time on various social media sites, and half of those teens have seen pictures of their friends drunk, passed out, or using drugs. The study also concludes that teens who are exposed to these images may be more likely try drinking and drugs.
